My Information is wrong, how do I update it?

All the information in this directory is provided from the MAP and STAR systems. If your information is shown wrong in the directory then it is 99% of the time wrong in MAP or STAR. If you want your information updated, you need to do the following:

We can not make any updates to the directory, as they will be overwritten by what ever is in MAP and STAR.

I had my information updated in MAP or STAR but my information is still not correct

Information that is shown in the directory is updated once a day around 11:00 PM EST. It is also possible that MAP or STAR has not been updated yet with your new information. It may take 2 to 3 days for your information to be corrected.

I do not want my information shown On-line, how do I get it removed?

If you do not want your information shown and you are a student you need to contact the Office of the University Registrar and fill out a confidientialty form so that your information is not made public. If you are an Employee of WVU, your information can not be removed.

How do I query the directory from my mail client?

If you would like to have your mail client, (Netscape, Eudora, Outlook, Groupwise, etc) query the On-line directory you can use the following information:

The LDAP host is : ldap.wvu.edu
The Search Root is: ou=people,dc=wvu,dc=edu
Specfic mail program information can be found Here

My information does not show up in the directory, why?

This could be from a couple of different reasons. If you have requested that your information not be displayed it will not show up. If you are a new student or employee, it may take a couple of days for the information to show up. If you are a student and you failed to pay a bill, your information will be removed from the directory.

The LDAP directory stores it's information in a FIFO format.
FIFO is an acronym for First In First Out.

Lets look at an example of how the directory works. Suppose that your last name is Smith and your first name is John. You then go to the directory search page and put the name Smith in the last name field. The directory will then return the first 5 Smith's that are in the directory starting from the first entry.
It does not sort the data until after the results are retrieved from the directory.

(The data that is in the directory is not stored in alphabetical order. It is stored in the order in which you were added to the directory. Students were added first and Faculty/Staff were added later. Nine times out of ten if you just do a last name search on a popular like Smith, Morris, Jones, you will get students listed first and if there is any "space" left, faculty and staff will be shown.)

In the table to the right the results you would get would be numbers 1-5. Number 6 would not be returned because the directory only allowed 5 results to be returned. (This is an example. The actual server hit limit is 50.).

So John Smith would not show up in the results. To get John Smith to show up you would have to put his first name in the first name box.

When trying to find some one it is always best to put as much information as you know about the person into the search field(s) as it will provide you with better results.

Some more helpful information:

  1. The basic search form does a "sounds like" and "contains" on the values you put in. For example if you put Smith in the last name box, it will also pull entries that sound like Smith and have the word Smith in them. (E.G. Goldsmith, etc). This is a good way to find a person who you are not sure of how to spell their name.
  2. The advanced search form allows you to control how the search is performed. For example if you know a persons name is spelled "John Smith" then you can use the advanced form and click on the "Exact match" check box to tell the server that you know it is spelled this way. You also have the option of adding the contains and sounds like fields too.
  3. If you want to just limit your search to Students or Faculty/Staff you should also use the advanced form as it will allow you to only select students or faculty/staff entries from the directory.
